A Garden Resort on the Atlantic Side of the Island

Most first-time visitors land in Punta Cana and never see the north coast. Senator Puerto Plata Spa Resort makes the case for the other shoreline. It sits on Maimón Bay, west of Puerto Plata, where the green ridges of the Cordillera Septentrional come down close to the sea and the Atlantic arrives with a little more character than the Caribbean side. The resort is a five-star, premium all-inclusive run by the Spanish group Senator Hotels & Resorts, laid out along a golden beach of more than a kilometre and wrapped in gardens planted with over 300 varieties of flora. It is a large property, built for ease rather than intimacy, and it does ease well.

Why It Works

We selected it for three reasons that are hard to find together on this coast. The first is the spa. Senzia Spa & Wellness is a destination in its own right, with a hydrotherapy circuit of jacuzzis, a hypersaline pool, hot and cold pools, a Turkish bath and a sauna, plus treatment rooms for single and couples' therapies. The second is the room ladder, which climbs from junior suites to swim-up suites facing the sea and a Presidential Suite with a private pool. The third is the beach itself, long enough to walk properly at either end of the day.

Why This Location

Maimón Bay is the calm western end of the Puerto Plata coast. Amber Cove, the cruise port built for the north shore, is roughly a thirteen-minute walk away, so the bay is busier on ship days. Ocean World Adventure Park at Cofresí is about ten minutes by road. The old town of Puerto Plata, with its Victorian wooden houses, the San Felipe fortress and the cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, lies a short drive east, and Playa Dorada is under forty minutes away. Gregorio Luperón International Airport is close to an hour by road, and the airport transfer is included in the stay.

Swim-Up Suites and a Presidential Pool

Accommodation is organised as a ladder of suites rather than standard rooms. Senator Junior Suites with a king bed form the base; Luxury Junior Suites add ocean views; the swim-up suites open straight onto a pool that faces the sea. Above them sit the Imperial Suite, with a separate bedroom, and the Presidential Suite, which has its own private pool. Beds use the group's own Dreams by Senator mattresses. A Royal Service tier adds superior rooms and extra attentions for a more attended stay.

Buffet, Teppanyaki and a Tropical Avenue

The all-inclusive covers a buffet and several à la carte restaurants, with Italian, steakhouse and a teppanyaki and sushi counter among the options, while a couple of premium culinary experiences are charged separately. Bars are spread across the beach, the pools and the gardens, including a swim-up bar for the laziest hours of the afternoon. The Tropical Avenue, a seafront promenade of shops, bars and restaurants, gives evenings a sense of place without leaving the property.

What to Know Before Booking

This is a large all-inclusive, and it runs on that rhythm: entertainment and a lively pool by day, the spa as the quiet counterweight. Families are welcome and there is a children's pool, but the sea-view suites, the swim-up rooms and the spa are designed for couples. Golfers will find Playa Dorada within reach by road, and the bay makes a comfortable base for a wider north coast loop.
