The House That Taught the Country What Luxury Was

El Embajador opened in 1956 and was, by common agreement, the first luxury hotel the Dominican Republic had. For seven decades it took the state receptions, the visiting heads of government and the parties that mattered, and the building still carries the confidence of that period: long horizontal lines, deep shaded terraces, a lobby built for arrivals. What saves it from being a museum is the restoration. Under the Royal Hideaway name the rooms and the public spaces have been brought forward without flattening the mid-century bones, and the gardens, twelve thousand square metres of them, were left exactly as they should be.

Why It Works

Most capital-city hotels give you a tower and a lift. This one gives you grounds. The Embassy Garden and the Tree of Life Garden wrap the building in mature tropical planting, the pool sits inside them, and the effect at six in the evening is closer to a country house than to a city block. What convinced us is that the scale is used properly: two hundred and sixty rooms, but the category ladder starts at Executive Junior Suites, so even the entry level is a suite. Add a spa, a fitness centre, two restaurants, two bars and a casino, and a long stay never needs to leave.

Why This Location

Bella Vista is the quiet, leafy, residential half of the capital, west of the centre and up from the sea. Downtown is a little over a mile away, the Colonial Zone about three and a half, which is fifteen to twenty minutes depending on the traffic, and the Malecon seafront is close enough for a run in the morning. That geography is the whole proposition. You sleep in gardens and among embassies, and the old city stays a short taxi ride rather than a day trip. What you give up is walking out of the door into the historic quarter, which is the argument for the small houses down there instead.

Where the Categories Start, and Where They End

Beginning the ladder at a junior suite changes the character of a big hotel. The Executive Junior Suites give a sitting area as standard, the Ambassador and Royal levels add space, height and the better garden or city outlooks, and the Presidential Suite runs past two hundred square metres, which is the room the hotel has always kept for the people it was built for. The register throughout is warm and classic rather than fashionable: timber, brass, deep upholstery, the mid-century geometry left visible. Ask for a garden outlook. The green is the reason to be here and it is wasted from the other side.

The Gardens, the Spa and the Evening

A day here has a shape the city does not usually allow. The pool sits in the planting, so mornings are spent under trees rather than between walls. Bi Wellness and Spa handles the afternoon, the fitness centre stays open for the people who need it, and the two restaurants cover breakfast through dinner without anyone having to organise a taxi. In the evening the casino and the bars pull a mixed crowd of guests and residents, which is how a grand hotel should feel. Two things to weigh. This is a large property with seven event rooms, so weddings and conferences come with the territory. And the beach is a long way off. This is a city hotel with a garden, not a resort.
