Casa Colonial Beach & Spa

The road east out of Cabarete gives up its kite schools and beach bars after a few miles, and at Perla Marina it turns into something quieter. Natura Cabana sits on that stretch: eleven bungalows of natural stone under high thatched roofs, standing in a garden that runs straight onto the sand. It is family-run, it has never been large, and nothing about it has been scaled up since. You arrive, someone walks you to a cabana with a private patio, and the rest of the stay is whatever the sea and the kitchen decide. The Dominican north coast has plenty of hotels. This one is a house.
Three reasons. The first is the building itself: stone walls, thatch overhead, island artwork inside, and an open plan that lets the trade wind through instead of sealing it out. The second is the beach, private and rarely busy, with a coastal path that carries on past the property. The third is that the wellness side is real rather than decorative, with the Attabeyra spa and its sauna and steam room, a yoga temple under the trees, an outdoor gym and classes that actually run. Eleven rooms also means the staff know your name by the second morning.
Perla Marina is the gap between Sosua and Cabarete, close enough to both to use them and far enough to escape them. Cabarete, with its kitesurf and windsurf schools and its beachfront tables, lies about three miles west, a short drive or a long walk on the sand. Playa Sosua and its reef snorkelling sit roughly five miles the other way. Gregorio Luperon international airport at Puerto Plata is around fifteen minutes by car, the shortest transfer of any serious address on this coast. What you do not get is nightlife on the doorstep. That is the arrangement.

Each cabana is built from local stone under a high thatched roof, with a living area, island artwork and a private patio facing either the garden or the water. They come in one, two and three bedroom layouts, plus a family bungalow, so a group can take a whole house rather than split across floors. The open construction means you sleep with the sound of the sea instead of an air handler. It also puts a ceiling on how many people can be here at once, which is the point of the place.
Wellness here is structural, not an upsell. Attabeyra, the spa, handles massage and body treatments and keeps a sauna and a steam room. The yoga temple stands in the garden and runs classes through the week, alongside an outdoor gym and sessions built around mobility and strength. Between those and the two kitchens, a day can pass without the car keys. Non-residents can buy a day pass, so the beach fills gently through the afternoon and empties again by evening.
This is a small, open-air property on a working coastline, so pack for wind and rain as much as for sun, and expect insects to come with an eco build in the tropics. There is no lift, no tower, no casino and no evening programme. Cabarete supplies the kitesurfing, the bars and the restaurants when you want them, and a taxi is the usual way back. Book the bungalows nearest the water early: there are not many, and returning guests know exactly which ones they are.
